Foundation Aid Rescues Food for Millions of Canadians

“We don’t have a food shortage problem in Canada; we have a food loss, recovery, and distribution problem.” This call to action from Second Harvest Canada resulted in a donation from the DRI Foundation, assisting its efforts to rescue surplus supplies and fight food insecurity.

Second Harvest Canada formed in 1985 to bring food to organizations throughout the country. According to the nonprofit, 46.5% of food produced in Canada is wasted, even though much of it could be used to help the 8.7 million Canadians facing food insecurity. It is an estimated $58 billion waste, and by ending up in landfills, it also contributes to climate pollution.

To combat this issue, Second Harvest developed a program to work across the supply chain, recapturing the food and providing it to social service agencies for distribution to those in need. The goal: to recover 87.4 million pounds of food and redistribute it to its network of 12,400+ food programs.

“Your contribution will help Second Harvest rescue enough food from across the supply chain to provide access to good food for those facing food insecurity across Canada,” says Second Harvest’s Emily Brandon. “At the same time, harmful greenhouse gas emissions will be prevented from polluting our shared environment through food waste in landfills.”

The DRI Foundation is proud to provide support and vital financial assistance to such nonprofit organizations to aid their missions in communities where they are needed. Click here to learn more about how you can help.
