For #GivingTuesday (Dec. 1, 2015), an annual day of support and fundraising for charity organizations around the world, the DRI Foundation held its first Twitter contest of a $5,000 prize donation for charities it has worked with in the past. The donation winner was Water Mission, a nonprofit Christian engineering organization that designs, builds and implements safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) solutions for people in developing countries and disaster areas.
Water Mission used the $5,000 prize donation in combination with other gifts to respond to the growing refugee crisis in Tanzania. Water Mission implemented a safe water treatment system at the Nyarugusu Refugee Camp in Tanzania large enough to supply safe water, every day, to 25,000 refugees living in the camp. The #GivingTuesday prize donation joined with a large group of donations was used for items such as pumps, storage tanks, tap stands, labor costs, water treatment costs, operator salary, assembly costs, transport, etc. Read more about Water Mission’s response to the refugee crisis in Tanzania here.
