We are pleased to announce that the DRI Foundation has made a $3,000 donation to Water Missions International to help meet the urgent need for safe water in Nepal.
Foundation Vice Chair Jerry Vevon presented the check to Water Mission’s George Greene IV, President and Chief Operating Officer.
Water Missions International is currently responding to meet the urgent need for safe water in Nepal as a result of the massive earthquake and aftershocks impacting the region. More than 17,000 people have been injured and the death toll has risen above 8,000 as rescue teams are reaching isolated communities outside of the capital of Kathmandu. According to the Nepal WASH cluster, over 4.2 million people suffer from inadequate food and water supplies, and the threat of cholera grows each day as a result of unsanitary living conditions.
Water Missions staff is working in collaboration with partners to respond to the urgent need for safe water as a result of the devastation. Water treatment equipment, including 12 Living Water Treatment Systems (LWTS) and 37 chlorination devices, has been sent to Nepal. Each LWTS is capable of treating approximately 40,000 liters of water per day. The water treatment systems being installed by Water Missions will provide up to 430,000 people with safe water every day.
Because Water Missions has partners and staff located around the world it is able to rapidly respond to this disaster. Three staff members from Water Missions are in Nepal to aid in relief efforts with three additional staff on the way. They are currently working in rural communities, testing water sources and designing solutions to meet growing needs.
